Not talent. Not luck. Grit. Have you ever thought about what brings out the best in your people?<\/b>\u2014not just at the beginning, but for the long run?<\/span><\/p>\n

When I ask managers whether they’d rather hire a \u201cnatural talent\u201d or someone who knows how to work hard, most say: \u201cGive me the team player, no question.\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span>But when it comes down to it? They often go with the talent.<\/span>
\n<\/span>And that makes sense\u2014talent is easy to spot and immediately impressive.<\/span>
\n<\/span>But here\u2019s the truth: talent gives you a head start. What gets you to the finish line\u2014is grit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Grit is what keeps people focused.<\/b>
\n<\/span>It\u2019s the fuel that drives perseverance through failure, through routine, through frustration.<\/span>
\n<\/span>But grit isn\u2019t just about working hard. It\u2019s about determination that\u2019s powered by meaning\u2014by passion, by purpose, by something bigger that keeps pulling you forward, even when you feel like giving up.<\/span><\/p>\n

So how can you spot grit in a candidate?<\/span>
\n<\/span>Look for the two defining traits of gritty people: <\/span>perseverance and hope.<\/b>
\n<\/span>You\u2019ll see it in their life story\u2014the urge to improve, to learn, to refine.<\/span>
\n<\/span>And that hope? It\u2019s not naive optimism like \u201ceverything will work out.\u201d It\u2019s <\/span>active hope<\/b>\u2014a deep belief:<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u201cIf I focus on what I can control, keep going, keep growing\u2014the results will come.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Now take that mindset\u2014and imagine an entire team that lives and breathes it.<\/span>
\n<\/span>\ud83e\udded<\/span> So how do you build a culture of grit?<\/b>
\n<\/span>\u2705<\/span> Normalize trial and error\u2014it\u2019s not failure, it\u2019s progress.<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2705<\/span> Give feedback on effort, not just outcomes.<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2705<\/span> Show practical optimism\u2014\u201cHere\u2019s how we\u2019ll get better.\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2705<\/span> And most of all\u2014<\/span>be the example yourself.<\/b><\/p>\n
